Mar 04, 2016 Airport Extreme Base Station Test Results MacBook Air Results. We started our tests with the 2015 MacBook Air. When running on the AEBS-n we got extremely slow response with download below 10Mbps and upload speeds almost at the stated limit of the ISP. We ran the test on both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz bands and the results were almost identical. Jun 05, 2016.

Plug a computer directly to the arris modem by ethernet.

You will never get speeds faster than this combo.

If the airport extreme is working as main router I am amazed you got the speed up to 700mbps as it is NOT gigabit router. it has gigabit ports. and will usually handle up to around 500Mbps . no faster.

I've had the service tech out to my house and the gadget that he tests the network with only goes to 750 mb/s so it is hard to know what *really* is happening.

If they send service tech out with a tester that only goes to 750Mbps that tells me they expect to never reach gigabit.

Your test with a single computer plugged directly to the modem is the same thing. if it reaches speeds of 700Mbps then that is your max speed. The ISP simply does not have the capacity to route faster than that to you and everyone else on your run who opted for gigabit.

If the computer does in fact reach full gigabit download speed. (or full gigabit adding upload and download. which is one way ISP can cheat with gigabit service). Then you need a much more powerful router. the airport is not in the running.

Nor can you achieve gigabit actual throughput over wireless on an airport. You would need to buy the very latest AC3100 products with external 3100 receiver plugged into a port capable of that speed. No Mac is made with any wireless card greater than AC1300 (real world throughput on a good day. around 600Mbps).

If the AirPort Extreme 802.11ac is set up as a DHCP and NAT router, then the WAN to LAN speed is going to be limited to about 300-400 Mbps. Check the disappointing results here:

If the AirPort Extreme is set up in Bridge Mode, then you might expect to see 600-700 Mbps speeds that way.

If you are not seeing comparable results, then the AirPort Extreme is not negotiating speeds correctly with your modem. Unfortunately, Apple removed all of the settings to manually adjust WAN port speeds on the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme, so there is not much that you can do other try a few unusual things....

One of them would be to insert a Gigabit Ethernet switch between the modem and AirPort Extreme to see if it will negotiate speeds better that way

Another would be to try a crossover Ethernet cable between the modem and AirPort Extreme.

If none of these things help, then you should ask Apple to replace the AirPort Extreme for you and hope for better luck on the next try.
